Ryan Seacrest wins another American Idol...

The American Idol finals are tonight…neither Scotty nor Lauren win. Vocal and performance coach Jimmy Iovine takes home one third of the title. Like the Roman’s that once packed the stone covered seats at the coliseum, people were instantly drawn to the once fierce lion Simon who’s crude, rude and daring approach to reality fed a chapter of American history that no longer wanted to be politically correct.

Jimmy upped the seriousness of the music game by bringing four decades of on the road and in the studio know-how to their inexperience. John Lennon, Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty, he engineered Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run and straight into the soul of 90’s style Hip Hop.

Patrick Goldstein from Warner Brother’s claims Jimmy can do anything without making someone feel unhappy.”

Honestly…outside of Haley taking a big chance on the unknown Lady Gaga song where in the season did he go wrong? He didn’t! He totally parked the baseball over the centerfield wall when he invited Lauren to sing her final tune about mothers.

Take ten minutes and Google his comments to the budding stars; spewed from his lungs were lessons that can used in the total rebuilding circumference of everyday business. Showmanship is the key to higher levels of success and how you present it makes you the star to invest in or the real reason why the client won’t return calls.

Music is business and business is good when you allow your path to be laced with dynamics that make you a leader and that begins with vocally connecting with rather than just playing a game played out by close friends that convinced you to give it a shot…

You need energy to win not pats on the back.

Winner number two is Rock n Roll Hall of Famer Steven Tyler from Aerosmith who walked onto a stage that shoulda, coulda been a massive atomic bomb dropped on a world of metal music that doesn’t like sell outs.

I never stopped believing in Steven because I’ve been backstage, falling witness to how he handles fans. He’s a marketing genius in the department of handshakes and eye to eye contact. His massive appeal is based on putting those who buy music first and this season anyone who thought they stood a chance still walked away believing in fifth and sixth chances because the harmony maker from the East Coast knows music comes from the soul and with the right amount of love and honey…even the evil Queen Bee will wait in long lines to become your best friend.

Champion number three; Ryan Seacrest…every generation has a Dick Clark and this radio morning show host is quickly becoming that guy whose picture will be plastered all over the pages of thick books of music history.

The moment Simon scowled and took his fame to another place to play anybody else would’ve walked beside the king of mean. This became Ryan’s year to hold together what little was left and shall end the season knowing we still want more.

James Brown was once coined the hardest working man in show business…being from Georgia there had to be a moment when Seacrest and James met and in that passing breeze fate planted a seed in Ryan’s palm and one day he’ll be recognized for being the radio jock that reignited American Pop Music.

Scotty and Lauren will do fine in the days after American Idol. After tonight like all things linked to fads and fashions their names and song titles will be nothing more than backyard picnic table talk based on, “Who came after Carrie Underwood?”

Does technique control your destiny?

My Jr. High chorus teacher Mr. Anderson once barked, “Music isn’t something you learn from a book. You live it by breathing life into the lyrics the artist has elected to share with you. If technique is your desired performance, please leave this class and don’t come back…awareness carries the true expression.”

Technique…

Can someone who’s unique fulfill their role inside a world where technique is God? Technique has nothing to do with catching a unique rabbit? The best way to achieve accomplishment is you neek up on it… Awareness molds champions.

From the outside the word technique looks bold, daring and confident. Sadly, get too close you’ll be introduced to overbearing. Technique carries weight, those who hold it’s Yoda like powers become the heavy weight kings of bragging holding down important positions of decision making turning every horizon into lopsided presentations of purpose without reasons to believe those following should continue. You can’t learn how to downhill ski from a book.

Nobody wins a Tae Kwon Do or other Mixed Martial Arts tournament without proper technique. Spend a few more minutes looking at the entire picture and within seconds you’ll begin to take note of mechanics. Inside blocks followed by front kick, land it, double punch, side kick, blah, blah, blah. I feel like we’re watching Kate Gosselin on Dancing with the Stars. Having a great hairstyle doesn’t win you a beauty contest.

I’ve fought Ivan Torres nearly 20 times—half my size, his technique the sharpest I’ve seen since meeting Grand Master Jung. Ivan nearly ripped my nose out of its place not because his round house kick is fed by rivers of proper technique but his ambition to study the entire picture through measures that are completely loyal to awareness creating a path to follow my bad habits, once the nose became open…the blood began to spurt.

What makes an employee, student or competitor unforgettable isn’t perfectly designed technique but their willingness to breathe life into the lyrics the artist elected to share with them. Bill Gates’ passion wasn’t to become the worlds richest man…he found value in creating a computer that non-nerds with giant pocket protectors could easily learn then better their life.

Apple’s introduction of the IPad entertains stockholders and Wall Street gamblers who have no clue who the client is or they would’ve made the computer fully capable of opening more than one application at a time. The IPhone should’ve been connected to the project! They’re using technique as the money making opportunity tool. Outside of the IPod, what’s been Apples next best thing? Happy investors.

How can we turn our chapters around and start performing like real rock stars? Rollingstone Magazine recently published a reader’s response to The Black Eyed Peas being named one of the most influential bands on earth. The fan of the pages wrote, “How can you call them a band when none of them play instruments…its all created in a recording studio by a club disc jockey.”

Author Lou Solomon believes its time to stop fitting in. Your daily goal should be set on living in your own skin. Your knowledge is extremely important but experience, insight and the stories created while climbing the ladder teaches others to become better players in a Corporate American world where you’ve got the bosses permission to be lazy because we’ll soon replace you with someone lazier.

As popular as Larry David is with Seinfeld and Curb your Enthusiasm, history will one day call him the cheapest date in the entertainment business. He finds no value in creating scripts—the scenes are set then you perform. If you’ve been attached to his past few seasons it’s easy to tell the difference between great actors and those who are nothing without the aid of someone putting the words in their mouth.

If I were to sit down with Adam Lambert and ask him to write a song on the spot…he’d exceed the limits. Bon Jovi, Bob Dylan, Usher, Nelly and Trace Adkins are no different. Put the microphone on Kanye West, Rihanna, Fergie and Carrie Underwood they'll scream for their bodyguards and tour managers to rid their world of the crazy man in front of them.

Through technique they are major money makers and shakers but can you see, feel, taste and be influenced to share the experience with someone using their art as a tool? My white guy booty can bounce with the best of them during Boom Boom Pow and I still can’t get enough of Party in the USA from Miss Miley Cyrus. But which one truly has staying power?

Watching Miley is a learning experience because her roots are sheltered by a connection to Disney…her evolution into superstardom and acceptance with all people rather than kids and young adults is nothing more than the rebirth of Little Ricky Nelson from Ozzy and Harriet. She’s using technique as a format to which she falls back on when knowledge, experience and insight are sitting in class preparing themselves for a much wiser place to breathe.

How does Charlie the car mechanic step away from technique? What about Juan the college student and busboy Mike from the family restaurant barely hanging on? Rather than watch Hells Kitchen, study Gordon Ramsey. Instead of watching old video’s of past American Idol contestants take the time to learn Simon Cowell’s path. Don’t read John C Maxwell, Anthony Robbins and the other 400,000 motivational books now 20% off at your favorite book store…study those books like your life depends on it. Every sentence holds the fuel that could lift you up and over this dull life and style you’ve adopted and blamed it on everything but choice.

People ask me all the time how I’ve survived 31 years of constantly changing radio…my answer has never bent…I don’t work in radio. I’m in the people business and business is always great.

Now sit up straight and do your own thing. I believe in you…

Dear Mom, today at band camp I was human.

Singer/songwriter John Mayer’s most recent verbal blunder within the glossy pages of Playboy stole from him the type of respect artists get when they’re old and bent over because their successes are much too big to carry. Spouted were careless words and reckless views that would’ve easily been erased from a reporter’s archives two decades ago when respecting the private thoughts of those who lift our days were protected by a vow and or trust between the interviewer and interviewee.

Allegedly speaking, Babe Ruth would’ve never survived this modern state of news reporting where the above and below average, middle or upper class carry with them a reason to catch in the act their weight in worth, which is usually a cell phone lens full of unmistakable human humility…

Author Lou Solomon posted the subject: Speaking from Intention—putting focus on denial, excuses, missing it, the gap and doubt. What we’re learning from the untrained reporter is that every breath we take, the entire world is waiting to watch you. So Lou wanted to know how people reacted to this statement: I don’t have time to watch everything little thing I say.

In which category do you fit?

I’m already doing everything I can.
I could do this better if I worked with like minded people.
Some of the best outcomes will stay out of reach without intentional speaking.

If you selected A…you are the minority. B received the most votes.

Being at work is no different than growing up in the house you ran away from shortly after turning eighteen. Like mindedness is rarely found within the ranks of family and like those four corners of the world, how many successful businesses raised their potential by being a like minded company? Your gift of performance is expected to fit within the configuration…anything less creates discomfort.

No wonder Face Book and Twitter are currently rocking the giant blue marble called Planet Earth. The new age spiritual journey isn’t to find the maker but rather grip the brim of Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones hat then set out to find someone who’s like minded. Not “If” but when there’s a disagreement, hit the button that shouts, “Remove!”

Divorce and separation are no different…the buttons to remove just cost more and usually help finance barely trained lawyers set on owning fancy homes with rich people coffee and creams on a table they swiped from a couple because one of them couldn’t foot the bill.

Should I have put a gap there? You know the gap! That tiny little space that can either create a complete thought or pull off a classic Simon Cowell example on American Idol where he didn’t tell the singer she sucked…the entire sentence didn’t go anywhere near where Talk Soup and other gibby gab Hollywood drama maker’s took it. Simon Cowell’s pause or gap made it look like he agreed with all America, this years collection of players, “S**K.” Did he mean to put a pause in the sentence? Did he realize what he was saying too late and attempt to find a conclusion to a thought already delivered?

The gap is a dangerous place to hang your Indiana Jones hat.

Lou posted and received these reactions: When someone insults me, there’s no reason to wait for the gap.

Great things happen when I choose my words.
You can’t let people take advantage of you.
It’s always wiser to think before you speak.

Without a pause or gap…what’s your reaction to Lou’s statement? If you said “A” you are in the middle. “C” is the king. Think before you speak.

Being an on-air radio junky, a thought provoker over a six second Dave Matthews intro…enormous amounts of thought and preparation goes into every performance. Yet if you were to interview me off the air…the man on the radio is nowhere near being the same. Great conversation begins with amble amounts of space to pour participation. If John Mayer had demanded that his manager or publicist be present during the Playboy interview…the questions and or layout of the interview would’ve been proofed.

In radio...we are protected by a 7 to 35 second delay. If something doesn't pop out right...its our highly trained ambition to reach over and hit the red button that dumps what was delivered.

I work with large microphones fully capable of recording everything that comes to life in the studio. From preachers to football and rock stars, to teachers to chefs and other visionaries set on trying to change the path of the planet…a lot is said, laughed at, mishandled and reshaped but none of it makes it out of my studio. In front of every client, visitor and or vocal motivator, the misquote, blunder, burp, cough, passing of gas and blooper is erased in front of them to never be heard again.

Trust is more valuable than the air we shove into our lungs. Once abused, the lack of trust will shoot your body, mind and soul into a moment of shock where you’ll spend the rest of your life gasping for that invisible something that’s readily available until the day someone decides to profit from your act of being 100% human.

Viral video’s get local news channel ratings. Viral video’s as of late have also served as a weapon of mass destruction on social networking sites that offer videos…and when you open it…a virus not only takes over your computer but everyone connected. What if for a moment we listened to our parents? What if we started to mind our own business? Would life truly get that much more boring?

Nobody liked Mrs. Kravitz on BeWitched. The nosey neighbor was the biggest pause, gap… How does your community of FB and Twitter friends look at you? Before radio I tried to be my mom’s perfect little angel. It got me nowhere, not even in the choir at church. Being a dork, part time loser, freak, weirdo, school boy, nerd, numbers puncher, music geek or pocket protector professor is cool but that doesn’t mean someone has to broadcast it. Being completely human is what we’re horribly afraid to do.

Suddenly we have a new name...we aren't the Baby Boomers, Generation X and Y...we are the collection of walkers who got nowhere because we spent way too much time watching what other people were doing. Between the years 1900 and 2000, billions of inventions gifted our lives with brilliant reasons why we should be proud to be American. Between 2001 and 2010...the farthest we've reached is the Send button on the computer screen.
