HA! LOL! LMFAO! I love today’s entry from dailychallenge.com: Put three things back where they belong…
Instantly a vision of my overbearing strict commanding Dad begins to play inside the brains movie theater called Memory; a man that held only one rule within his tattered and torn clinched WW II American veteran fist, “When you use something…put it away!”
It’s become his legacy.
I never heard him ask, “Where did I lay the hammer?”
Nor did he lose car keys, single socks, his kids in a mall or a shiny penny picked up on a rocky path somewhere in the middle of those tall snow capped peaks called Montana mountains.
It seems like an easy task; grab a plate, eat off it, put it in the dishwasher then slide it back into the cupboard.
I wish I could say it’s easy! I’d jump on the bike, ride it beyond parental limits, jump off at the park and misplace it somewhere between the Little League Field and the Craft House. If you lose enough things eventually the bank account begins to reflect your faults.
Why is it so important to put things back where they belong?
Being the lowest of the low on the totem pole of radio disc jockey requires a pair of earphones; big, small, expensive or Wal-Mart cheap…it doesn’t matter; they’re the most important tool of the trade. The day you don’t have them is like standing on the corner of walk and don’t walk; what are you going to do? Without them you have no radio show! Everybody knows where the morning people hide their earphones; do you shatter the rules of respect and latch onto it or figure out a way to sway an assumed friend to bail you out?
Call me a freak but I know when someone’s stinky ears have been in contact with what connects me to the music headed straight for a listener’s day.
Why is it so important to put things back where they belong?
One word: organization. When you’re organized you’re in control. Being in control relieves stress. Less stress leads to productivity.
I can’t tell you how many interns have walked into my radio station studio with no earphones expecting to locate success in a business where there’s 3,000 people applying for a single opening. Thank God Taco Bell provides their window order takers with sound devices!
Can you imagine watching an NFL Carolina Panther’s game and Cam Newton forgot his jersey?
“Today, you’re going to be number zero! No wait! Let’s see if the opposing team has an extra jersey with your number on it?”
Lost somewhere in the 80’s was the discipline required to hold people accountable for their lack of respecting tools. Could it be the first step of memory loss? Might it be just a test? I constantly blame my dog Harold for playing Patrick Swayze Ghost tricks on me, “Harold! I’m serious…I really do need to find that hook that’ll hang this painting straight and not lean like everything else in my life!”
If elected into the North Carolina State House of Representatives the first bill I’ll put into motion is the introduction of A bright bold and beautiful tag that clearly states: WARNING: Not putting this away when finished will lead to cussing, accusing and no ice cream before bed!
My luck an elected official from Gaston County will challenge it claiming how unfair the label would be to video Gamer’s that lose stuff all the time, “How dare you attack their lack of commitment!”
I’ve often believed Lowes and Home Depot sprinkle metal devouring salts on their tools that over time dissolve screw drivers, drill bits and carpet nails.
Why is it so important to put things back where they belong?
It saves time. Time you don’t know you have until you get there. When you’ve got extra time you want to spend it! If lost then its back to cussing, accusing and using other items that have nothing in common with the task but by God you’re going to try it and in doing so more damage is done.
Only one time have I forgotten where the car was parked; Laurel, Montana 1979 during a major out of this century celebration without Disco where the cups were tossed and the line to Keg Dive was a great place to meet new people. It was social media the old fashioned face to face way!
By the time I’m 60 the picture taking device in the Droid will take on a new mission: never stop taking snap shots of every destination.
Why is it so important to put things back where they belong?
There is a positive to this blogging message: if you don’t put things back…America might get back to working. The more you lose the bigger the demand for light brown pants worn while working at the Petco. Losing those gloves is a good thing; they’re making more in Spokane, Washington!
Is this why we lose the need to feed our bodies with common sense? Up until the recession, before multitasking and micro-managing; making sense made you a pocket protecting computer nerd; today, if you break enough dishes you won’t be asked to them anymore. Compliments to Kris Stevens from 969 The Kat for that line. At least he brings his own earphones. That makes him an on-air hero!

Wanna fight?
Ok…alrighty…readjust the tired aching cheeks in a butt that’s been pinched by economic crunches only to be shoved into a squeaky backbreaking office chair that makes your legs hurt more than the ego; reach up and touch the puffy sags under each eye before glancing to see if any type of chocolate is nearby for a quick high.
Very rarely will you spot words falling from the tip of my writing instrument that asks you to stare into the soul of a growing irritation.
We’ve all got them and usually turn it into major steep hills connected to unstoppable valleys. More often then not…no daily page of experience is written without something or someone in your life generating just enough juice to send your worries and fears into a cyclone of destruction.
The makers of The Daily Challenge believe the consumed mind, body and soul need to hit the storm head on. First, identify the problem then come up with two solutions. The stronger of the two becomes your newfound way.
What?
The true goal is to give yourself a break, cut the inner you some slack, lay low and stop pointing fingers or tossing out accusations like you’re Weatherman Larry Sprinkle with a fist full of candy at the Matthews Labor Day Parade.
Stress is released when you stop to think. Rather than concentrate on one getaway plan…listen to the other side of common sense and reason. By developing the attitude of creating solutions less pressure is shoved into the height of your workday.
I’m the furthest thing from calm. I’m from the Pacific Northwest where loud verbal arguments lead to quick fisted city park brawls and unexplained bruises in places you swore were never hit, kicked or bit. Then I turned 18 and the rules of life changed. Busting tail meant going to jail.
A quick change had to be made in my game…if there was to be a resolution I needed to put focus on a solution.
I turn to my roots. Growing up in Montana made western boots, chickens to feed and miles of dirt trails to walk to school; you’re given enough time and space to reshape the race. Such freedoms to a kid is just another reason to moan and groan about having mean parents that refuse to score your challenged feet a Trans Am or anything resembling a Ford Rambler. Just give me four wheels. Fighting with the father figure pushed those wheels a little further down the highway. Learning to speak his language, understand his purpose of protection and the next thing you know…I had a 77 AMX.
Take the hurt and anger out of a disagreement and the soils that remain feed your efforts to succeed.
Solutions…two for each unfit, too tight of a grip, choking til you can’t breathe situation at home, work, driving through traffic or attempting to return an item to a mall store without a receipt.
Got problems with the government mending our broken Wall Street and Bank of America have too big of an ego economy? What’s your solution?
How many days into office are required before invisible groups with just enough cash meet up with you for lunch and without even knowing it the next vote placed was in favor of change?
In 1993 I finally made it to the position of Music Director at a radio station. I had proved my worth beyond being a talk too much on air disc jockey. Three months into the performance I resigned. I couldn’t handle it. Record companies have more power than a state senator. The strongest voice in music at the time had released a new single; I didn’t hear it. Meaning…it didn’t move me. I did nothing to pursue its success on the station. A great record rep moves over the vomit and goes straight to the source of the sickness. Not only did the station manager add the song but our logo suddenly appeared on shopping bags at an annual fall show.
Decisions today are connected to promises. Those agreements become part of your workday. Stay and play or go with no show. Stress instantly digs into the core of your destination; nights become sleepless, lunch is stale and anyone worth their weight in gold is just another reason to yell.
One problem…two solutions. Give your nose channels fresh air to breathe or the old man hairs your grandfather once shared will take root and horde all the best boogers for bigger more embarrassing moments.
Become the silent wolf…

Stop giving your success away to your boss!
It’s Monday! 90% of your day will be dominated by 2% of coworker’s asking, “How was your weekend? What’s your day look like? Can you help me?”
Where on the turntable of life did the vinyl record get scratched or broken?
High school fails to teach three very important expectations: In the blink of an eye you’ll be 50. Having children is legalized bank robbery and no matter what you put into your job it never turns out to be what they introduced during the interview process.
When you set an apple outside under a hot Carolina sun, what happens?
It becomes you! Dreams dried. A once beautiful smile sunk into its lost soul. The single stem that once fed vital juices into a tiny springtime blossom dropped like a faded memory.
What gives? Wait…you do! Over and over again.
When will something or someone give back to you? The finger pointing is at you! Reality being a big ole hairy bite; if receiving has become your sink hole…never expect the dirt from other mountains to fill what you’ve given permission to create.
You can’t give in the name of expecting a return. When you give you relinquish. The receiver of what you give holds every right to treat the gift good, great or poorly without you expecting to say stop or give me something back. It’s wrong for you to say, “What are you willing to do?”
In 1991 Andrew Ashwood point blank asked me, “Are you a Broadcaster or a radio DJ”
Sticking my chest out there like a well oiled extremely over determined rooster in heat I replied, “Broadcaster!”
“Good! I can only pay you for 28 hours a week but I need you for 60.”
Morally and physically illegal but you know as well as I do…peer pressure and the fear of unemployment keeps you from whistle blowing.
In 1991 I knowingly gave my life away never realizing the Great Recession of 08 and 2011 would have the same impact on your life. Every mall store, hardware outlet, bank, hospital, restaurant and gas station I visit features not one but endless amounts of bad apples and there’s nothing the giver can do about where they’ve placed their current step.
Or so you’ve been trained…
Time to go back to school! Mentally not physically. Meyouhealth.com invites you to recall three of your favorite high school subjects then asks you to write down why.
Openly I share…mine were Creative Writing, Chorus and Current Events or any type of history…especially the history of religious studies; which we got away with in the latter part of the 70’s.
According to meyouhealth.com what we enjoy and appreciate says a great deal about us. Retouching a high school fun study teaches our present self that learning isn’t a chore. Even at 49 I can wave goodbye to radio and become a Montana State History teacher or a religious mentor that puts focus on the present using current decisions by others to help shape a more positive path for newer dreams to blossom in places looked upon as being safer.
By breaking away from assumption that learning or work is a pain in the roots, it allows you to find better reasons to shatter negative stereotypes connected to the empty answers arriving everyday you ask questions.
Artist Way author Julia Cameron teachers her readers to quickly page through a magazine and pull out only the photos that instantly enlighten you. Without thought quickly paste them to a giant sheet of white paper. Stand back and take a better view of your inner life.
Radio legend Wolfman Jack explains in his autobiography that the majority of those performing on car speakers aren’t doing it because they’ve got a burning desire to report news, weather forecasts and to sell the artist and title. When you take a deeper look into the channels that flood your favorite radio station the single reason why most decide to give broadcasting a shot is because the stage to do your thing is easier to locate than a concert hall or local bar. You hear words from wordy word radio disc jockeys…those sharing the conversation see it as writing lyrics; which is why it hurts so bad when someone says you suck! Art isn’t meant to suck…it’s your view of what is or isn’t and those passing by see it or don’t.
Your job is no different.
There are three rules to follow in today’s business world; find success, hire employees that sacrifice. When in doubt revert back to number one find success by locating someone new to do the job.
Three high school subjects then tell me why you liked them. This is America…you can be anything you want at anytime of the day or night. For you to be that person you’ve got to stop trading your happiness for other people’s big boats, thick steaks bathed in wines you can’t pronounce.
I will always believe in you first…

Organizing your wallet creates success...
The depth of the average pocket is measured by what? Living most of my childhood south of the tracks, life’s ever changing obstacle course forgot to introduce me to the importance of owning everything. I still remember the day when finding a weathered feather from a barn swallow heightened the passion for living.
About a month ago Face Book hooked me up to a web page called The Daily Challenge; simple tasks that do more for your invisible self than the person showcased by the color of your car, size of your refrigerator, diameter of the flat screen or how thick the green grows inside the clip purchased at an airport because you got tired of pulling crap out of your pocket and the loose dollars didn’t make sense.
Todays focused is based on getting better control of your spending habits by taking five minutes to organize your wallet. The mission to release excess weight such as receipts, handwritten notes and phone numbers, plastic cards you’ve maxed and no longer use and get out of jail free cards swiped during your last bout with Monopoly.
Freeing up space gives your core energy a place to grow.
Julia Cameron teaches creative writers, painters and musicians to constantly keep a watchful eye on the presentation of their closet. The more you stack, stuff and clutter up the joint the easier it is for you to become depressed, pulled in too many directions and fearful there being a large crash.
My biggest fantasy isn’t to one day find success in radio, have my music featured in Rollingstone Magazine or get my taxes paid on time. I want to rent, steal or borrow a humungous ugly as sin blue dumpster and park it in the driveway; every room, every corner of the yard—throw every chapter of this badly written book away.
No yard sale, flea market or city trash pickup because the last thing I want to experience is to walk into someone’s house and see a radio script signed by Carolina Panther kicker John Kasay hanging on a strangers wall.
This isn’t a negative! We spend our childhood years demanding not to become our parents only to check out wearing our grandparent’s shoes. If you’ve ever spent a weekend wandering through someone’s past shoved into a box and thought, “I’d rather be putting eight hours in at my normal job.” Then you should expect people to feel the same way when you aren’t around to stop them from invading what you call sacred.
How sick are we in the department of hording? Drive slowly through a local campground and see what people are bringing with them. We don’t camp in America we rent temporary spaces to transfer our home to.
I live by one rule in radio…only bring what you can take out in an hour. I still have unopened boxes brimming with 95QQ office clutter from 1993 in the garage. Not just any box…the fancy stuff you get at cool stores that claim its ok to save everything. Promotional pictures when my hair touched my a**, earphones the size of NYC and radio shows on reel; the last time I played on one of those things was 17 years ago.
No wonder I can’t grow in the business! I’ve run out of room to stuff more inside! I know! I’ll write and put everything on a hard drive. How’s that working for ya? Computer running a little slow? How many plastic objects do you have stacked up that would volunteer to melt first during a home fire?
Take five minutes and clean out your wallet. The next time you step on the scale you might actually earn a smile rather than an old person grumble.
I will always believe in you first…
