November 1979…Billings Senior High School; a mentally but not necessarily physically young punk kid with barely a page of street smarts tucked loosely in his back pocket held onto a few aspirations, to be a top scoring hockey junky for the Bighorns, a loud as can be beat pounding rock star like Steven Tyler and Gene Simmons or the Big Sky Country’s version of an out of control Wolfman Jack on transistor and bedside clock radio’s.
“It’s not going to happen…” The Current Events teacher spilled out onto the plate of reality. “I can’t see you being anything more than a busboy at the Muzzle Loader CafĂ©.”
“Wait a second!” The student angrily interrupted. “I lay out three extremely important paths of choice and the best you can come up with is someone stuck erasing what Montana families of ten or more with messy kids deliver?”
“The highest grade you have is a D plus! You have three F’s… You’re Creative Writing teacher calls you a nightmare because the idea of following rules requires an act of congress. You aren’t going to make it out of here unless you drop out like your brother.”
Goethe once said, “What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.”
Henrik Ibsen wrote, “The strongest man in the world is he who stands most alone.”
Gandhi inspired millions when releasing, “Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.”
A quote from Lao Tzu, “While loving someone or something deeply you shall be given courage.”
And now you know why I quit the garage band, hung up the hockey skates, threw away my wishes to meet girls in accounting class and bravely took on the Creative Writing instructor exclaiming, “Being different in the way I play with words is my accent and you’d never tell a Texan to speed up a long drawn out drawl!”
She must have put a wicked spell on me because where am I? In the South! Plus I find tremendous pleasure in teaching! Cough! Gag! Curse! But I graduated with a B plus and the rest A's. I can’t be proud of that…because I know where the low grades came from…it was too easy to give up and it took a Government teacher with ba**s to put the left foot in front of the right.
You don’t need a radio disc jockey to tell you that strength is a virtue and talent is the gift. We’ve all known someone who’s incredibly talented but feature no physical or mental strength. Becoming a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do had nothing to do with how well I kicked, punched and tried to tear up the mat. I was the freak that became spiritually connected to the deepest levels of mental travel vowing to better understand the art of how a little wind and water changes everything.
Those on the outside believe belts are handed out to anyone willing to fork out the right amount of monthly money. I’m here to tell you that just ain’t happening. If that was the case Master Harris should’ve given me my 3rd degree belt in the moments after my July 21, 2009 heart attack; eight fricken classes shy of the big test and a much higher power whispered, “You haven’t learned s***.”
Strength is a virtue and talent is the gift.
The 1980’s and 90’s American attitude was, “We’re the best! Nobody can beat us! We’re so damn big and strong that we’re going to give jobs away to other countries who think they can out smart, out perform and double the delivery speed this nation has spent decades perfecting.” How’s that workin for ya?
Richard Andrew King writes in his book The Black Belt Book of Life; the Secrets of a Martial Arts Master, “The Wall….through their sweat, blood, tears, hopes and dreams they have come—seeking, striving to reach a pinnacle only few have conquered; seeking to rise above the mediocre and mundane to stand apart in triumph. But the wall, standing as an edifice to courage, determination and the substance of a relentless spirit, has broken all but just a few—the few who could not be broken; the few who can truly claim to be named a Black Belt.”
Picked up on a Katy Couric CBS News story last night; the number of free spirits who’ve shoved their middle fingers high into the Corporate American air and said, “I can do this without you.” And just like that lazy bump in the middle of a gravel road at Billings Senior they’ve opened their ruffled feathers and learned the flight of the wind.
No day passes that you won’t be challenged. If life wasn’t supposed to be a test we’d all be winners on American Idol and The Voice. No matter how stinky your armpits are; it should be your daily challenge to exercise your indomitable will.
When I signed on to this journey in June of 62 nobody stood at the front door of the womb shouting, “You won’t be part of the Baby Boomer Generation nor will you qualify for Gen X and Y. You’ll be part of the people that’ll be in between and that means no radio station will figure out what your favorite songs are therefore learn to love all things including Hip Hop and the B-52’s.”
The Beatles did nothing for me but George Harrison proved you can make a lot of waves without Lennon and McCartney at your side.
Strength is a virtue and talent is the gift.
If someone tells you your writing and speaking habits suck…congratulations! For a brief moment you had an honest to God listener! Let it out! Everything you dream or your inner voice will get as stinky as your arm pits…that’s it…put your nose down there and take a whiff…the next step has to start somewhere. Never forget the smell of failure.

Don't just sit there! Do something!
Did you know the average human year isn’t what you were taught in school; fifty two weeks or twelve months? Unless it’s leap year the truest shape of our annual path around the galaxy is 365.242199 days in length.
And how many of those point 242199’s has your boss made you work? If you collect enough of them doesn’t that qualify you for some serious overtime pay or better insurance?
I’d love to be the fly on a wall, “Sir…I read on a blog today that we’ve put in an extra .242199 amount of time…I’m thinking you owe me 11.645338 cents.”
It’s television ratings time, I’m shocked Channel Three, Nine and NBC 6 haven’t used these shocking facts to uncover the names of employees who are still owed money, “Tonight at five; companies could go belly up because backlogs show they haven’t paid their share of the point 242199 extra day people have worked.”
It doesn’t seem like much until you mix it in with some good dirt; walk around any McDonald’s parking lot and you’re bound to find another penny or quite possibly a dime to go with those 11.645338 cents in your pocket. We are living the good times!
But who’s willing to take the step to cover their financial butt?
Don’t forget willingness is nothing more than desire. I call it junk talk; wishful thinking, a passing thought or a wow that would be cool moment often heard around campfires, backyard BBQ’s, standing in the long lines at Carowinds, sitting at a red light uptown or on my Uncle Willie’s farm in Ranchester, Wyoming where the hired help sit and discuss the days plans at 5am while throwing down incredibly greasy bacon, hotter than life eggs and toasts that’s been stacked higher than the chimney across the room.
What we constantly forget aren’t the happiest of times but rather how to grow an idea and or willingness into a physical fire breathing I did this reality. Willingness is a mosquito that lands on your arm but never finds the time to suck your blood.
Effort makes your moment into a success story.
Yes its true “will” comes from a deeper being or higher reality but what lacks knowing and or knowledge fails to escape the surface of your colorful eyes.
Oh my god that was even too deep for me! But true!
My entire life I had the willingness, desire, passion and way to write books and deliver them to readers in far away countries but because I allowed myself the right to hold a wishful thought higher than creating a path of effort all six books now published sat in boxes completely hidden from a potential passerby.
I made it my inside joke; when I turn 65 every book idea jotted down inside these daily writings will one day become books sent out to dance on the steps of a wandering imagination. I had a heart attack at 47...what if I never make to 65?
True power, a performance worth holding, an event be it a wedding, graduation, leaving your dusty old pain in the rear job to putting the last brick in the foundation of a walkway leading to your flower garden; true power cannot exist until you’ve reached beyond the stages of willingness.
How can you do this? Millions of people go to work everyday believing their only hope isn’t to have a roof over their head but an insurance card in their pocket. There’s got to be a better place to dream! Knowledge is the shell that teaches the rest of you that it’s ok to let go.
I’ll never forget Master Harris calmly reminding his black belts, “On test day; I’m going to work you harder than any time in your life. You will be challenged to quit. I will put you in situations that confuse your mind body and soul so much your only desire will be to sit down and if you elect to do that I’ll make you hold a brick over your head until the test is over. With effort there will be success. Effort will put you on the black belt path. As difficult as it may seem always remember my right hand is firmly wrapped around the belt you wear and I will not let you fall off the mountain.”
People get into martial arts to kick, punch and slam by way of knocking down intruders you’ll probably never meet. We get really really good at protecting our tough little selves wishfully thinking that one day we’ll be Masters only to learn such desires melt like ice cream unless you gain the knowledge of a real world and allow it to be shaped on your black belt path; which in essence could be your banking job, stock person position at a grocery store, answering the phones or checking people out at the gas station on the corner.
Breaking bricks seems so manly until you put the vision to use during a day when coworkers have consumed so much of your time the thought of breathing steals from the company’s path of wants and needs. Moving through the mountain takes effort. Thinking about it is nothing more than baby bruises on your fingers because you elected to pull your hand back before destroying the clay.
It’s a new week; work it like you mean it. Put in an extra point 242199 days full of knowledge and effort and for the first time you might touch the edge of holy hole in the wall Batman…this is great!
Anyone on this giant blue marble in the sky can bowl a perfect 300 game but it isn’t going to happen by just showing up…
Be conscious of yourself and all things you’ve invited to the circles you’ve drawn in the sand. By being aware of where you put your “will” helps to create knowledge required to make it real. I laugh hard when people tell me they once wanted to be a radio disc jockey; with their attempt at sounding radio, a voice that’s been roughed up by arguments with the images in the mirror I hear a sound that’s completely out of tune but rather than chase them away the laugh becomes a serious look, “So…what stopped you? If today was our last day on earth would you be the jock that wouldn’t go to work or the Broadcaster that would guarantee his listeners a safe passage?”
Do you really think NBC’s Brian William’s wanted his Sunday night to be interrupted when President Obama elected to share with the world the news about Osama Bin Laden? His black belt path says no moment passes that he doesn’t wait for the call to set desire aside to complete his journey toward a horizon generated by his trust in effort.
Effort turns dreams, desires and wishful thoughts into paths that will one day inspire people you’ll never meet.
I’ll always believe in you first…

What is it...lost or found
Ask me about failure and you’ve got my attention longer than a tweet on Twitter or a Like This on Face Book. Failure is the measurement of one man’s opinion versus the end result of continuation.
Within the time limits of today’s workplace settings what becomes the failed attempt if any attempt to succeed has been made? If demands aren’t met does that truly shout failure or has the accused been set up to fail by decision maker's who want to walk taller in his or her shoes?
Richard Andrew King writes, “Within the heart emotions stirs. Failure isn’t what we prefer; but yet, the victors all confer—the road to success is paved with failure. Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.”
Winston Churchill reminds us, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage that counts.”
In my first book One Man’s 1,021 Thoughts the writer within sharply challenged the paths of choice calling most conclusions ill fated bricks in my foundation of failure. I didn’t understand the difference between being numb versus being depressed; was it a signal of having bad connections or had one inspired the other to take lead?
In the book I write, “Depression isn’t anger against yourself or others—its God’s way of saying, Here’s a gift, you shall be un-numb.”
What is the cause of numbness? Is it failure? Fear of failure? Assumption of there being failure?
Mr. King explains that we live in a dual dimension, positive and negative, high and low, masculine and feminine, hot water and cold water…war and peace. You can’t have one without experiencing the other.
Numbness occurs when both hands have wrapped their grip around the same coin featuring heads and tails. Which when studied at a deeper level is a true sign of there not being balance. It’s extremely difficult to digest that without failure there can be no success. Gas prices nearing the four dollar mark and news channels have begun the process of questioning our nearly healed economy. Their actions have created a reaction; inciting fear.
It’s illegal for someone to shout fire in a theater but completely accepted if a reporter exposes the nuclear water off the shores of Japan might be poisoning the tuna we consume by the tons everyday.
King continues, “Failure is feared wounding those in search of success. People are quick to quit because they’re convinced that failure is something to be ashamed of when in reality it’s an integral part of the success process.”
Has President Obama failed this nation? It truly depends on who you’ve chosen to listen to. Being a country based on freedom of thought, expression and influences to be whatever you want anytime you want the recession tripped Corporate America while inspiring new visions from fresh entrepreneurs to reach up from the ashes and grab newer ways to continue believing in the power of succeeding.
King pushes the door wide open when he states clearly that no one sets out to fail but we all do.
No day passes that I’m not bombarded by radio broadcasting interns who’ve elected to chase visions of becoming part of an industry that critics have chewed up and spit out since the birth of television. Each of them believes they’re the next big thing and will do whatever is required for them to astonishingly attain the rights to the highest peak. My first reaction is to see how they handle failure.
I do not set them up for failure…the goal is to utilize a wise lesson taught 2,000 years ago from the masters of martial arts and open their wisdom by inviting the up and coming speaker chasers to see broadcasting for what it is and not what they assume it could be. I take off my black belt and wear only white, to show them that we are equal in ways they don't realize.
At a CIAA Job Fair I calmly asked the inquisitive mind, “How often do you blog? How many times have you been moved by a web page article but elected not to share it? While on Face Book do the subjects you cover include your endeavors or do you design your thoughts to include everybody?”
Social Media is the next valuable step that must be performed everyday for it to properly succeed.
Radio has not met its failure; its our houly mission to figure out where listeners are going and we won’t stop trying to find the communications link until long after a reaction has been met.
Think about this; 80’s long hair band legend Sebastian Bach recently said on That Metal Show, “Why do artist keep saying they were signed to record deals when nobody is buying records?”
I am the worst at calling my radio dreams a total failure!
I stepped off the full time performance stage in 1997 to help shape the image of what radio was quickly becoming only to stop, turn around and realize for fourteen years as a performer I can't help but feel as if I've helped everybody but me find success.
Talk about an ego trip! From the chapters of martial arts I pull from the paragraphs an act of humbleness. Rather than feed my desires to talk over someone’s favorite song the daily ambition is to drive down South Blvd to look at Keith Hawthorne Ford’s brilliantly large new location. He’s changing people’s lives by putting them in cars and trucks that are built to last. Someone had to create the radio messages built on truth and trust to open the mindset of a passerby to succeed without fear. We've been a team since he was a punk wanna-be sales rep that spent every morning washing the cars he wanted to sell. My failures as on on-air talent have become my success in a production room working one on one with clients like Keith whose only goal is to find people who want something new without allowing change to become what feeds failure.
Humble is when you stop to realize a higher purpose of performance…although a giant bowl of chocolate ice cream sounds incredible on a hot summer Carolina day…failure might clog the thought process if asked to share it but in the end its who you’ve invited into the circle that makes success a champion of right choices.
If your job has made you numb…locate the center of your balance. Bosses don’t create stress you do by allowing the bosses expectations to flood your life with a fear of failure. No matter how hard you try to become the biggest and best at what you do without failure you’ll never learn the black belt path of being humble and or centered. Being labeled a victor is nothing more than a high to which we all become addicted to. When you can’t get that high any more the decision is to chase other means of attaining shortcuts.
You are in the business of you…your job is only a client. I will always believe in you first.

Lead or be led...
When you walk into a Barnes and Nobel, surf Amazon or listen to the Preacher man delivering the Sunday Morning address; what truly comes to mind when the received message influences your heart to become a better leader?
What? Back it down! The reaction is almost always the same; we’re told to step up our game in the world of leadership and instantly the response is, “No thanks! Not my game! Don’t want the responsibility! Do you have any clue who you’re talking to?”
I get it! Since the first grade we’ve been trained to believe leaders are overly hyper political figures with egos the size of Mount Mitchell. Leaders are hard driven, seek glorification and feel the need to exceed the limits no matter what the final cost.
Time to reboot your thinking machine!
Tribes author Seth Godin whips the mask off fantasy by placing reality in the forefront of your extremely busy workday. The truest shape of a modern leader is one of the most productive people on staff. They don’t rush through the halls or race between the cubicles shouting, “I’m in control and your job is to listen to me!”
Having and or adopting the attitude of looking out for number one don’t pay off in the chapters and channels of continued success. It only creates motivation through intimidation which is one of the leading reasons why the majority of today’s unemployed refuse to be featured on the lists of employees getting back to a normal life and style.
Godin exposes the CEO with the brightly lit well decorated office with no desire to ever return to a gray dungeon dreary cubicle and the religious leader that doesn’t drive a beat up old gas guzzler but chooses instead to pirate a private jet to press the flesh…
Winning begins when leaders adopt the Jimmy Carter attitude of setting aside worldly wants and requirements to build houses for the poor.
As this nation finds itself poking its American mug up from the rubble created by the rich and need to be famous…new leaders are being born by way of picking up the tools and putting them to use. Undercover Boss on CBS should be a requirement on every block used to rebuild this country.
No day passes that my radio station commercial production room door isn’t open for the CEO of Clear Channel to walk in and see what’s required to take a computer screen overflowing with words and turn it into 5, 10 and 30 seconds of influence that a listener can tune out of two seconds after it first appears on the air.
Jeff in production says its time for the man on top of the human pyramid to find out what the man on bottom is doing to guarantee his rightful place at the peak isn’t going to come crashing down.
Raise your hand if your boss truly knows what you do in the way of keeping those office doors open.
Substance versus symbol…a true black belt in martial arts is constantly reminded of the path to which they must follow; take care of the community. At no time did the Master say, “Let it go to your head and flood your heart. Use it to dominate the class by showing off what you can do to white and green belts locked in the oooh and awe stages of growth.”
The Master said, “Take care of the community.”
Seth Godin reminds us that the strongest tribe is the one mastered by the leader that doesn’t mind getting their hands dirty, their mistakes laughed at or their vision taunted then rebuilt by coworkers seeking the same horizon.
But what if such methods of retraining are mere streaks of wish and wanna-be’s? Then choose to be your own leader. The Egyptian Pyramids are constructed of hundreds of giant blocks on the bottom row keeping that peak in pristine shape. Call me an idiot but that seems to be a place of incredible strength and leadership. The moment a single decision to leave the nest is received the entire process has been gifted with the right to become part of a past that 110% of us will never remember.
Tell yourself and the image in the mirror, “Tired, worn out, excessively over worked and stinky like pig sweat is what it takes to be a real leader.”
What is it going to take to convince your heart that you’re truly the very best at being you?
If your answer is a better paycheck…I get it. Now what are you going to do as a brilliant leader to change that?
I will always believe in you first…

Bosses aren't paid to make your day better...
In the Black Belt Book of Life; Secrets of a Martial Artist, the author writes, “Anyone can teeter totter but not everyone can balance.”
Pope John Paul II believed the best and safest thing to keep is balance in your life, if you can do that and live that way…you are a really wise person.
No page is turned in our everyday chapters that don’t somehow connect itself to a requirement of being balanced. When there’s balance we have harmony, productivity and for some it proves to be extremely meaningful. Balance has a way of confusing angst, unhappiness and destruction.
In an age of corporate manipulation caused by leadership through intimidation; the cost of being in balance isn’t worth the effort unless the average person has prepared their future to be without a career.
How can the typical employee who is carelessly overworked and underpaid find peace within the four walls of business? You’ll discover the answer while standing on one leg for a long period of time.
Balance requires exercise. Your mind needs to be taught what balance is. Like a student stuck in school so are your arms, back, shoulders, head and ten toes and each of your body parts must learn to recognize the positive energy required to be in balance.
Do you have balance? Test yourself by standing on one leg then closing your eyes. A clouded core leaves no room for new challenges to be met.
I test my balance ten to twenty times a day; in public you’ll catch me on one leg while wrapping the other foot around my calf. It’s a high level red belt move taught in a form called Goom-gong where your balance is taken on like a mountain attacked by unexpected storms. Physically going through the motions of recognizing balances teaches the rest of me to perform at their height without leaning too far to the left or right.
I love doing pushups! Not because it builds stronger arms and incredible chest muscles but if performed properly there should be incredible balance between your toes holding up the booty to the arms hoisting the ego maker into its rightful position. Locating balance has to be a physical effort.
I can’t balance a check book. Online banking to me was much bigger than the introduction of the Ipod and Wii video game that moves with your body. Balancing anything is a difficult state to maintain. It’s mental, emotional and in some cases spiritual. Balance is a continual struggle not a passive activity therefore energy is required in order to be equal on all sides.
Concentration is the key that unlocks a world fed by balance. There are three levels of concentration; from your stomach or dan jun, above your head and in the center of your eye brows.
For concentration and focus to do their job all three levels of focus must work in harmony. Your stomach is where stress lives and breathes…when there’s too much we tend to fill up with bad food, alcohol and other means of getting legally high. Properly breathing from your stomach allows you to open the entire process of your lungs. Watch people around you breathing…their shoulders move. That flat out sucks because that means their entire body is living off ten percent of what they’ve taught their lungs to perform.
Balance above you is clearing the way for the future to arrive. Some use meditation while others sit back in their chair at work and give permission to their imagination to take a ride into the happy zone.
Your eye brows are where your history lives. As long as you are carrying it there’s never any reason to keep reaching forward. Be thankful for what you have done then let it go to grow.
Having focus aligns your body parts, Your knees, ankles, wrists, neck and little toe are no different than being the parent of six kids all wanting to go some place different. You either have chaos or balance—there’s never an in between.
Writing everyday doesn’t give me balance it makes me aware of where I’m not in tune.
For 47 years people constantly asked me about what I wanted to do with my life and every time I replied, “To be in the right place at the right time.” I became incredibly fixed on that thought never realizing that on July 21, 2009 at 6:15 pm I’d be walking into an emergency room for a soar throat only to come out with a heart attack. I arrived at the hospital at the opening stages of what claims millions of lives every year. I was in the right place at the right time.
Balance… Do I lead a well balanced life? Far from it. Yin/Yang because being out of control feeds my passion to write wedding vows, music, paint portraits, piece together books and blogs. I used to be the tight rope walker turned runner that hit that single thin line never realizing how quickly it can come to a halt until you get three quarters of the way across then you find balance.
What makes me different today is awareness. I know what takes me off a day of balance and I warn people strongly when such actions are about to unfold.
Inside a business world of little to no guarantees every breath you take resembles the Mile High Swinging Bridge on Grandfather Mountain where at any unsuspected moment a gust of wind can reach up and steal you from existence. Balance prepares you to study the environment while gifting you with the knowledge to lock down if the bricks that make up your foundation begin to crumble.
Mystics call our world the plane of struggle…
Let that thought sink in for a bit… a little longer… a little longer.
The one common connection we have is a need for balance which leads to focus and it’s within those invisible abilities something incredible is given hope…you.
I will always believe in you first…
